How I Read a Book

I thought it would be fun to share “how” we each read books!

Here’s how I read:

Format: I don’t own an e-reader yet – gasp, I know – maybe someday. So I read hard copies.

Time: The best reading time for me is at naptime or bedtime.

How: I read pretty piecemeal, meaning in starts and stops, a little at a time. On rare occasion, I may stay up to finish a book. But I need sleep so that doesn’t happen very often.

Where: I read on my bed – it’s the most comfy spot.

Secret: I sneak and read the ending! That’s probably more shocking than not having an e-reader, right? 🙂 But when I can’t stand not knowing another minute how the hero and heroine are going to get together – or if I want to find out if a good kiss is coming – then I totally skip ahead to see what happens. Once I know, I’m good to go back and keep reading!

What about you? E-reader or hard copy? Day-time reader, night-time reader or stay-up-until it’s finished reader? Where’s your favorite reading spot? Do you ever sneak a peek at the ending or patiently wait for all to be revealed?

  1. I read on my Kindle, but I still buy hard copies too. I actually do my main reading while elliptical-ing each day. It works for me. 🙂 And makes the workout go faster. Every once in awhile I sneak a peak at the end, but most of the time I hold out. 🙂

  2. Hi Stacy!

I don't have an E-reader either. I can see where they would come in handy (and I am reading 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea on my phone…) but I prefer the feel of paper over plastic.
Skip ahead? Ok, I've done that before! But not often and only if it's a book that I'm required to read for a class and I'm not particularly enjoying it or it's so stressful that I just *have* to know if it's going to be ok or if I'm going to be tremendously let down!

    Have a great week!
    Jen

  3. I'm a piece meal reader at this stage in my life. I used to love reading in big chunks, but that type of reading will have to wait!

I read in my Kindle and hard copies – depending on if I bought the book or borrowed it from the library. I love to read in different places. On the back deck, in bed, on the couch in my sun room, in the bathtub – wherever I can find a quiet place!

I never, ever look ahead! I love not knowing! Sometimes I even cover up the bottom of a page if I know the kiss or some other big moment is coming – just so I don't skip lines to read it! 🙂

  4. Eeeek! You read the ending!!!! Bad, bad, bad. LOL I NEVER read an ending. If I did, I wouldn't read the rest of the book. lol
I love my Nook but my sister gave it to me. If she hadn't, I'd still be reading hard copies too. I take books everywhere with me and read when I can. 🙂 Cute post!

  5. Julie – I do think the ease of reading away from home makes the e-reader appealing!

Melissa – I totally agree! Reading while working out makes the whole thing more enjoyable. 🙂

Jen – LOL! Yes, it's all about that stress factor of "I have to know this is going to turn out ok!"

Gabrielle – I love that you're just the opposite. 🙂 Covering lines up so you're surprised!

Jessica – I know! My dad gives me a hard time about it too.

  6. I prefer books to e-readers, hands down.

I'm like you, I read in starts and stops, a little at a time. Sometimes I draw them out to several chapters if I have time. Mostly, I catch time on my lunch hour and bedtime.

I have sneak peeked the end before…

  7. I read from both an eReader (my iPod) and hardcopy. I still prefer the hardcopy, but it's sooooo quick and easy to buy an ebook. Too easy.

I read for an hour at bedtime every night, and every other moment I can sneak it in. 🙂

  8. Hey, Stacie! Just found your blog (finally)!

I don't have an e-reader, either… but I'm about to buy my first one, resentfully.

And I don't skip to the end of books, but I will read a summary of every movie I see before I watch it. I love movie spoilers.

  9. Stina – Ah, an hour of reading at bedtime sounds just heavenly! 🙂 My to-read pile could use that.

Lindsay – Love the "resentfully" part! 🙂 I may end up getting one, kicking and screaming, myself!

  10. Fun post idea, Stacy! Y'know, I used to be a diehard paper book reader, but I've fully morphed into an e-reader junkie now. I'm addicted to the backlighting and the lack of mess in and around my bookshelf. 🙂

  11. Hard copy for me, too! I mostly read while I'm eating lunch, or having to wait somewhere. I never read in huge chunks. And I NEVER peek! If I wonder how many pages the book is, I even cover the words on that last page with my hands, so I won't accidentally see anything. No spoilers for me!

  12. Peggy – Reading while eating lunch is a good idea. It cracks me up how several of you have said you cover up things so as not to peek at all! 🙂

David – All right – another person who peeks at the ending! Though I'm starting to think we're in the minority.

Jennifer – Paper books at the beach – now that's a place I want to go read. 🙂
