Movie Quotology

Growing up, my sisters and I loved to quote movies. Much to the chagrin of my parents, we liked to play this game at the dinner table. To get around the rule of no movie quoting at the table, we’d slide our chairs back so we weren’t actually sitting up to the table.

It was great to marry into a family who enjoy movie quoting as much as I do – and at the dinner table, no less. 🙂 But you’d better quote it right in my husband’s family or you’re in trouble!

Quite regularly my husband and I sprinkle our conversations with movie quotes – ’cause sometimes those just say it best. Here are a few of our favorites:

“That ain’t no happy child!”
Mr. Potato Head – Toy Story
“I’m not happy, Bob. Not happy.”
Mr. Incredible’s Boss – The Incredibles
“Which one, which one.”
Yzma – The Emperor’s New Groove
“You’re cookin’ my grits, coach.”
Coach Herman Boone – Remember the Titans
“Put it on my tab.”
Dan – Dan in Real Life

Do you like to quote movies? What are some of your favorite movie lines? Do you have any fun family games/past times you enjoy?

  1. Give me an 80s John Hughes movie. I used to be able to recite every line of Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink.

"Drinking and driving don't mix. That's why I ride a bike."

  2. I love Dan in Real Life. We quote them all the time. Funny thing is I can't remember which ones. Hmm. I've had fun quoting some from Wedding Crashers lately which is wrong in so many ways.

  3. Yes! I love movie quotes. Especially old, old movies, which means a lot of people don't get the references, but that's okay. I can recite Barbra Streisand/Ryan O'Neal's "What's Up Doc" from beginning to end.

I loved that you included a Dan in Real Life quote. My absolute favorite movie from the last few years. Another quote fave from that one: "This corn is an angel." 🙂

  4. Brent – I can quote just about every line from The Princess Bride. 🙂

Wendy – One of my other favorite lines from Dan in Real Life is the whole "you're a murderer of love!" 🙂 But that one doesn't fit into every day conversation so well.

Jennifer – My husband loves Christmas Vacation!

Melissa – I love that line from Dan in Real Life too! If you watch the bonus features, it says Steve just made that line up. Everyone was able to keep from laughing at it until the take ended.

  5. My family quotes anything from LOTR to Star Wars and everything in between ~ too many to list~

Sometimes we just text each other random movie quotes. It always brings a smile to my face and brightens my day when I get one of those texts from my kids.

  6. When I was in college my roommates and I covered our walls with movie quotes (cheap decorations 🙂 Hmmm…one of my favorites:

"We are men of action. Lies do not become us." – Princess Bride

  7. Loree – What a fun idea – to send movie quote texts! I need to do that. 🙂

Angela – Fabulous decorating idea! My roomies and I had a white board for writing Jack Handy's deep thoughts.

Jessica – Give it a try. You'll never go back. 🙂

  8. I tend to quote songs while carrying a sad resemblance of the tune, old songs…from youth. My kids have no idea and think I just come up with these things as lyrical commentaries on the situation. LOL

  9. LOL. I totally love to quote movies. Love the quotes you mentioned and I love that you used to push your chairs away from the table. hahaha. That's awesome!

  10. My family quotes movies like crazy too…I quoted two just tonight that Dan didn't get. "Smooth as hot honey" and "Good night for a 'coon hunt". Do you know what movies those are from?

  11. Sandra – I like to break into song too! 🙂

Leigh – All three of us – and my parents – remember us pushing our chairs back. We thought we were so clever!

Meghan – I'm totally stumped! 🙂 Can't figure out which movies those two lines are from, though the coon hunting one sounds so familiar.

  12. Liking to quote movies and actually getting the quotes right are 2 different things. My husband's family are HUGE movie quoters. And my son corrects me when I'm wrong.

I need to watch Remember the Titans again!

  13. Elana – We like quoting Nacho Libre too! One of my favorite lines is "Orphans smile and be happy." 🙂

Jenny – LOL! That's cute about your son. My husband's family is the same way – they'll tell ya if you don't get it right. 🙂
